This year’s edition of the Swiss-Georgian festival for contemporary music, Close Encounters, concludes with a joint concert by the two ensembles KIOSK and u /r. The festival’s core concept of polyphonic musical encounters – which certainly includes moments of friction – is embodied by the ensemble KIOSK, founded in 2021 and comprising Russudan Meipariani (GE/DE), Tamriko Kordzaia (GE/CH), Karolina Öhman (SVE/CH) and Sophie Krayer (CH) in a truly paradigmatic way, both in its multinational membership and in its programmes. At Kulturfeilerei, KIOSK presents a programme featuring compositions by musicians from the Caucasus, Iran and Switzerland. These find a continuation, an echo or a counterpart in electroacoustic interludes by the Zurich-based trio u /r.
At the concert in the Kulturfeilerei, various elements from the current edition of Close Encounters in Tbilisi and Switzerland will come together once again: works that were performed on different concert evenings in both countries, for example; or the collaboration between the two ensembles, which had already put on a concert in Tbilisi in February last year, together with musicians from Georgia. And last but not least, the concert will see cellist Karolina Öhman perform for the first time as an official member of KIOSK. On the one hand, this is a premiere worth celebrating; on the other, Karolina has been a musical partner of Tamriko Kordzaia and KIOSK for many years, and the Close Encounters festival, in which she has been musically involved for a long time, is almost unimaginable without her – that, too, is actually a reason to celebrate!

This two-part concert evening presents the Biel audience with two new works. The first, Zugzwang, is a new work by the Zurich composer Tomas Korber, performed by Christian Kobi (saxophone) · Tobias Gerber (saxophone, sampler) · Karolina Öhman (cello) · Tamriko Kordzaia (piano) · Christian Wolfarth (percussion) · Tomas Korber (composition, electronics, feedback). In the second part, the DDK Trio joins forces with the Japanese musician Sachiko M — an icon of the international electronic music scene — for a unique collaboration, the premiere of which, a 45-minute improvised performance, will take place during this Soirée Bruit in the stunning Zwinglikirche, with the characteristic architectural brutalism of the 1960s. https://bruit-asso.org/zugzwang-%c2%b7-ddk-trio-sachiko-m/
